Bring your clothes, bring your repairs and join Fremantle for the Great Global Mend - a global community event celebrating the simple but powerful act of keeping our clothes in use for longer.

The City of Fremantle is bringing the Great Global Mend to Fremantle, with the Slow Fashion Hub hosting the event at FOMO. Together, we're inviting the community to build repair skills, keep clothing in

use and take part in one shared hour of mending.

At 11am sharp, we'll join menders elsewhere in Western Australia and around the world and get repairing.

Need some help? Come early.

Not sure what to do with that hole, tear or damaged area? That's exactly why we're opening our Repair

Bar from 9:30am.

Anastasia and Chloe from the Slow Fashion Hub will be on hand to offer free advice and demonstrate some simple repair approaches. We'll help you think creatively about your garment and work out how you might tackle your repair.

You can explore approaches such as simple hand mending, patching, applique, visible mending and decorative repair.

This is preparation time - a chance to work out your repair, gather what you need and be completely ready

when the official mend begins at 11am.

Already know what you're doing?

If you're confident about your repairs, have everything you need and are simply coming along to join the Great Global Mend, there's no need to arrive at 9:30am.

Please arrive no later than 10:30am. This gives us time to check you in, weigh the garments you've brought to repair and make sure everyone is settled and ready for the 11am start.

What should I bring?

Bring a few garments that need some love and repair if you can - perhaps a hole, tear, missing button, damaged hem or something that's simply been sitting in your mending pile for far too long.

If you have your own basic mending kit, please bring it along. Basic needles and thread will also be available at the Slow Fashion Hub.

Participation in the Great Global Mend, along with repair advice and demonstrations, is free.

If you'd like access to the Slow Fashion Hub's Repair Bar, an optional $5 materials contribution is payable on the day.

You'll be able to explore a selection of surplus fabrics, prepared textile patches, lace, trims and other creative repair materials, including materials for creating your own iron-on textile patches.

You are equally welcome to bring your own repair materials and participate completely free of charge.

At 11am, we mend!

Once everyone is checked in, garments are weighed and preparations are complete, we'll be ready.

At 11am sharp, the Great Global Mend begins. We'll have one collective hour to get repairing, finishing at 12 noon.

Whether you're an experienced mender or have a garment you haven't the faintest idea how to fix, bring it along and be part of it.

Why Upcycling?

Upcycling is hands-on climate action that anyone can take part in. By repairing, restyling and reimagining existing clothing, participants help reduce the amount of textile waste ending up in landfill - one of the world's fastest-growing environmental challenges. Every garment given a second life also means fewer new resources are needed to create something from scratch.

We use reclaimed materials including fabric offcuts, deadstock textiles, damaged garments and donated clothing, trims and tools, showing that creativity can transform what others see as waste into something unique and valuable.

Beyond the environmental impact, upcycling equips people with practical skills they can continue using at home. Learning how to repair, customise and reinvent clothing helps extend the life of garments, reduce the need to buy new, and save money over time.

Most importantly, upcycling is a fun, hands-on creative experience with no rules. It's a chance to experiment, learn through making, and create something that reflects your own personality and style. Whether you're picking up a needle for the first time or already love making, there's no right or wrong way to create.
